When did the Polar Plunge start for Special Olympics?
There are over 15 Polar Plunges statewide and the event serves as the signature fundraising initiative to benefit the athletes and programs of Special Olympics New York. The first Plunge in Rochester was held in 2001 and had 75 plungers with $15,000 being raised. The event is a part of the Lakeside Winter Celebration.
What do you wear for a Polar Plunge?
Bring a robe, blanket, towel or jacket to wear while waiting to plunge and for when you get out of the water. A towel to dry off as well as an extra towel to stand on is also a good idea. Wear tennis or water shoes. Not only is the ground freezing, but your feet will be numb in the water and it’s good precaution.
