Is oak good for turning bowls?
Live oak is a favorite of mine cause it turns so nicely. most all oaks I prefer using for one time turnings. I also use green live oak a lot in demos for turning balls. No dust and scrapes well.
What speed should you turn wood?
If the lathe is a step pulley drive system, choose a setting around 750 RPM to 1100 RPM, staying lower around 750 RPM if you can. If the lathe has a variable speed control system, set it around 750 RPM until the work is turned round, then increase the speed, but I wouldn’t recommend going above 1100-1200 RPM.

- Open can of Danish Oil.
- Wipe Danish all over bowl until it stops absorbing the oil.
- Sing a few verses of whatever is playing on the stereo (or wipe oil on to other convenient surfaces in the shop)
- Repeat until desired shine is achieved. The desired shine is very much a personal preference.
