A sharp stone knife can fill in for your favorite knife, and the best part is that they are easy to make. Most parts of the globe have abundant rocks that can serve as blades, and you don’t need to be a geologist to find them. Use a large, flat hammer stone to crack down hard on the rock you are breaking.
What stones can be made into knives?
Surprisingly effective blades and tools can be flaked from a variety of stones, including flint, chert, jasper, chalcedony, quartz, and obsidian. That last one is my favorite. Obsidian is a form of volcanic glass common on the west coast and around the Pacific Rim.

Can you make a knife out of granite?
Granite would not make a very good knife, but it does make fairly good hammers and axes because the grain is coarse and tough, tough enough that it has to be pecked or ground instead of chipped. Better for knives and chisels are stones like slate, jade, quartz, and flint.

Does quartz make a good knife?
While quartz or silica will create a very nice sharp edge, it will not create a very DURABLE edge. Quartz/silica will shatter and break fairly easily, and ESPECIALLY if the edge is thin and narrow. Decent knives for slicing – not very satisfactory swords for slashing and hitting things.
