Can you study abroad and be an au pair?

The Au Pair program matches people who are travelling abroad to complete their studies and/or work, with international families that will provide them with accommodations in exchange for their services as a nanny or caregiver for the family’s children or elderly members.
What education do you need to be an au pair?
Au Pairs are required to take at least 6 semester credits or 72 hours at an accredited post-secondary university in the United States. TutorCare Au Pairs are required to take 12 semester credits at an accredited post-secondary university. Au pairs who extend their visa are required to take additional credits.
Can an au pair study while working?
If you are going to au pair in the USA, it is not possible to attend classes as a full-time student. Couple of things to consider: In exchange for the J1 sponsorship, a round trip flight, and room and board, you are expected to work up to 45 hours a week for your host family for 50 weeks.

Can an au pair go to university?
Keep in mind that if you get a language certification during your time as an au pair, you’ll be able to attend university as an international student wherever you want: this could be an amazing experience!
Can au pairs go to school?
All au pairs are required to take 6 credits (or the equivalent of approximately 80 hours in the classroom) over the course of their year. EduCare companions are required to take 12 credits (approximately 160 hours). Classes must be taken at a university, college or continuing education program sponsored by a college.

How long can an au pair stay in the United States? Au pairs initially come to the U.S. on a 12-month J-1 au pair visa and can extend for an additional 6, 9 or 12-months, allowing a family to benefit from up to two years of live-in childcare from the same au pair.
