Trichoscopic examination of epilated hair can be done by placing the hair against a light background and visualizing the roots at higher magnification (dermoscopictrichogram). Active disease is characterized by dystrophic hairs with fractured roots and telogen hairs.

A diagnosis of telogen effluvium is established when over 20% of the hairs examined are in telogen phase.
