Is DHCP used for IPv4?
DHCP is used for IPv4 and IPv6. While both versions serve the same purpose, the details of the protocol for IPv4 and IPv6 are sufficiently different that they should be considered separate protocols.
How does DHCP work with IPv4?
A client device (or DHCP client), such as a laptop, joins a network and requests an IP address. The request is made to a DHCP server. These servers are often configured with redundancy—often called DHCP failover—or clustering among other network servers. Servers can run on both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.
What ports does DHCP IPv4 use?
DHCP is a network protocol to used to configure IP networks. A DHCP server listens to UDP port 67 and dynamically assigns IP addresses and other network parameters to DHCP clients. These clients will listen for responses on UDP port 68.
What is IPv4 DHCP relay?
The DHCP relay agent is any TCP/IP host which is used to forward requests and replies between the DHCP server and client when the server is present on a different network. Relay agents receive DHCP messages and then generate a new DHCP message to send out on another INTERFACE.
What are the 4 steps of DHCP?
DHCP operations fall into four phases: server discovery, IP lease offer, IP lease request, and IP lease acknowledgement. These stages are often abbreviated as DORA for discovery, offer, request, and acknowledgement.
Is DHCPv6 required?
DHCPv6 is not necessary for configuring hosts with the addresses of Domain Name System (DNS) servers, because they can be configured using Neighbor Discovery Protocol, which is also the mechanism for stateless autoconfiguration.
Is DHCP needed for IPv6?
It’s not required because IPv6 also has autoconfiguration, but many people prefer to manage their address space, so they use DHCP(v6) to track addresses.
How do I know if a DHCP server is running on my network?
