Is LifeStraw actually good?
It’s lightweight, easy to use, and simple for a super low price. It filters out particulates and pathogens like bacteria and protozoa (Giardia and Cryptosporidium), but cannot filter out viruses. If a lightweight, simple on-the-carry filter for a good price is what you seek, the 1.75-ounce Lifestraw can’t be beat.
Is there something better than LifeStraw?

Can you drink your own urine through a LifeStraw?
LifeStraw should remove cells and germs. But urine is removing some/many undesirable chemicals/compounds from your blood stream for a reason, and LifeStraw cannot remove most of those ions. If you must have the water to survive, go for it and good luck.
Can you drink salt water with LifeStraw?
If you mean it in the most literal sense, Yes. You can use it to drink seawater. It will still remove algae, fecal matter from fish, tiny plant matter, and microplastic. It will not remove chemicals, but you may indeed drink purified salt water.

According to the manufacturer, Lifestraw has a shelf life of 5 years with periodic usage and proper drying. Unused in the original wrapper it appears to me to be useful much longer but according to the manufacturer it is 5 years.
Does a LifeStraw filter salt?
The original device does not filter viruses, chemicals, salt water, and heavy metals, but newer versions of the product, (like LifeStraw Flex or LifeStraw Home) are capable of removing chemicals and heavy metals including lead.
