What is CWDM optic?
Table of Contents
CWDM is a low-cost method to maximize existing fiber by decreasing the channel spacing between wavelengths. CWDM has a lower cost per channel than dense WDM (DWDM) and no configuration is necessary. CWDM optical devices can increase bandwidth on existing fiber infrastructure and alleviate fiber exhaustion.
What is the difference between DWDM and WDM?
WDM stands for wavelength division multiplexing while DWDM stands for dense wavelength division multiplexing. In WDM the number of the light source are used each emits the light of different wavelength but in DWDM utilized closely spaces channels.
What is the maximum distance covered by CWDM?
CWDM is a convenient and low-cost solution for distances up to 70km. But between 40km and its maximum distance of 70km CWDM tends to be limited to 8 channels due to a phenomena called the water peak of the fiber (more about this further down).
How many channels are there in CWDM?
18 channels
CWDM is a technology that allows up to 18 channels to be connected over a dark fiber pair. Two wavelength regions are most commonly associated with CWDM, 1310nm and 1550nm.
What is a DWDM channel?
The functionality of DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) resembles to the one of CWDM. The DWDM channel spacing is 0.8/0.4 nm (100 GHz/50 GHz grid). This small channel spacing allows to transmit simultaneously more information.
What is the difference between OTN and SDH?
SDH is defined to have three layers—regenerator section, multiplex section, and path—whereas OTN includes only the section and path. The multiplex section was defined to facilitate fault isolation and protection.
What does OTN stand for?
OTN
Acronym | Definition |
---|---|
OTN | On That Note |
OTN | Online Television Network |
OTN | Own-The-Night (military technology) |
OTN | Our Teen Network (website) |
Why WDM is used in optical fiber?
Wavelength Division Multiplexing, WDM, is a technology that increases bandwidth by allowing different data streams at different frequencies to be sent over a single optical fiber network. Signals at WDM wavelengths are independent from each other.
Is DWDM a Layer 2?
The DWDM transport network, combined with Layer 2 Ethernet switching, enables unprecedented dynamic data capacity and throughput sharing and distribution across multiple ports, blades, and complexes.
