Air Pollution Index
The Air Pollution Index (API) is a simple and generalized way to describe the air quality, which is used in Malaysia. It is calculated from several sets of air pollution data and was formerly used in mainland China and Hong Kong.
How is Malaysia API calculated?
The API value is calculated based on average concentration of air pollutants namely SO2, NO2, CO, O3, PM2.5 and PM10. The air pollutant with the highest concentration (dominant pollutant) will determine the API value.

What is the current Malaysia Air Pollution Index?
In 2019 Malaysia came in ranked 50th place amongst all the countries of the world, with a PM2. 5 rating of 19.36 µg/m³, putting its yearly average into the ‘moderately’ polluted range.
Is AQI the same as API?
The US AQI and the Malaysian API both use the same six pollutants, and both use the dominant pollutant – the pollutant with the highest Index value – to determine the overall Index value.

Why is KL so hazy?
Kuala Lumpur also has a long history of large fuel subsidies and large investment into road infrastructure, whilst leaving the public transport industry in the dust behind it. The fallout from this is a huge reliance and overuse of personal cars, contributing heavily to the smoke and haze in the city.
What is the effect of increasing API reading on body health?
API readings between 200 and 200 show an air quality that is deemed very unhealthy. General health effects include significant aggravation of symptoms and decreased exercise tolerance for those suffering from heart or lung disease. The symptoms will also be widespread among the healthy population.
How do you calculate air quality index?
Our air quality index is calculated based on averages of all pollutant concentrations measured in a full hour, a full 8 hours, or a full day. To calculate an hourly air quality index, we average at least 90 measured data points of pollution concentration from a full hour (e.g. between 09:00 AM and 10:00 AM).

What is standard guideline for air pollution in Malaysia?
The New Ambient Air Quality Standard adopts 6 air pollutants criteria that include 5 existing air pollutants which are particulate matter with the size of less than 10 micron (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ground level ozone (O3) as well as 1 additional parameter which …
Does Malaysia have haze?
Haze is a common phenomenon afflicting Southeast Asia (SEA), including Malaysia, and has occurred almost every year within the last few decades. Haze is associated with high level of air pollutants; it reduces visibility and affects human health in the affected SEA countries.
